Blackberry case — RIM shares sinking in apparent anticipation of ruling

Is my beloved BlackBerry going to become a paperweight?

Rimchart_3Shares of Research in Motion (RIM), maker of the BlackBerry plunged on Friday.  Investors are beginning to speculate about an upcoming ruling in a RIM appeal of a patent infringement verdict.  NTP of Virginia successfully sued RIM for patent infringement, receiving a verdict last summer and an injunction against RIM.  The injunction was stayed while RIM appeals the decision.

The BlackBerry dispute received much attention last year when Congress encouraged the parties to settle the dispute.  After spending $6M on BlackBerry technology, the legislative branch saw the patent dispute as a threat to its new communication system, and hinted, in a not-so-subtle way, that the Congressional devices had national security implications.
