How great would it be to own an Indian pharmaceutical company? For the last several decades, the companies could reverse engineer any patented drug in the world and manufacture knock-offs without fear of liability for infringement. Only process patents were a concern, but even those were ignored thanks to a lax governmental attitude toward intellectual property.
But wait, it gets better…
Now, with patent protection for pharmaceutical products becoming the law in India, the same companies are able to leverage the monies earned from their knock-off business to become legitimate manufacturers with global reach. Research and development is likely on the horizon.
