USPTO provides Q&A on new fees and confirms the nightmare scenario

Today the Patent and Trademark Office posted a Q&A on the new fee structure [.pdf] set to take effect immediately upon signature by the President of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2005 (H.R. 4818).  The three sets of questions and answers drive home an important message — the fees are effective immediately.  The last set is the kicker — it confirms the nightmare scenario — loss of rights are possible by incorrect payment of a maintenance fee on the date of enactment.
