WTO asks India to comply with January 1 deadline, but acknowledges extension is possible
According to this article, the World Trade Organization has stated that it is in the best interest of India to meet its looming deadline of January 1, 2005 to amend its patent law to be fully compliant with the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPs).
But, WTO Director General Supachai Panitchpakdi hinted that an extension might be allowed if other WTO members approve. India has missed prior deadlines on its TRIPs compliance requirements — one by four years. The current amendment, though, is the most significant to date, adding pharmaceuticals and other products as patentable subject matter.
Considering the controversial nature of the current amendment, significant delay may occur.
